From Publishers Weekly
Berg, the editor-in-chief of Kabbalah magazine, offers a readable introduction into what he claims is the universal mystical tradition. The Kabbalah is replete with modern analogies (even Vince Lombardi!) and is written in an intelligent style expressly designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience. However, Berg overreaches with the claim that "Kabbalah is the birthright of all humanity. It does not belong to any religion or ethnic group." Unless God desires everyone to be Jewish (which Judaism has always rejected), it is disingenuous to say that "The Way" is "for literally everyone in the world" and then proceed to refer exclusively to Jewish texts, prayers, heroes and holidays and the mysterious power of Hebrew and Hebrew alone. Berg's "way" has much in common with other mystical traditions, particularly reincarnation and meditation. "Love thy neighbor" may be "the secret of living in accordance with Kabbalah," but it is hardly a monopoly. Ironically, the path outlined here is reminiscent of St. Paul's ancient Christian missions to the pagans. St. Paul eliminated Jewish ritual observance and made the religion palatable to the uninitiated winning countless converts to a new tradition, but alienating observant Jews. Characterizing the Sabbath as "one day just to sit back and cruise, if that's what we really want to do" may win the hearts of Santana and Madonna, but it will likely leave serious Jewish mystics cringing.
About Michael Berg
At the time of Rabbi Michael Berg’s birth, The Zohar, the foundational text for the mysteries and wisdom of Kabbalah, was accessible to only a few, elite scholars, having been written in the obscure, ancient language of Aramaic and translated only into Hebrew.
Few would have suspected that his birth would herald one of the greatest achievements in Kabbalistic scholarship: Michael would grow up to create the first-ever contemporary English translation of The Zohar, a task mind-boggling in scope, requiring decades of research. With impeccable scholarship, Rabbi Berg opened the mysteries of this great text to the entire world through a 23 volume series, including the original Aramaic, English translation and full-commentary. It has already had the dramatic effect of greatly accelerating the dissemination of Kabbalistic knowledge, helping to make this great spiritual teaching available to people of different faiths all around the world who previously would have needed extensive training to fathom the text. In hindsight, it is an accomplishment that Rabbi Michael Berg seemed destined to accomplish.
As the son of the world’s greatest living Kabbalist, Rav Berg, Michael was weaned on Kabbalistic knowledge. But such an extraordinary birthright would require years of formal study in order to fully blossom. So, after being born in Israel, Michael started his studies in the United States at The Rabbinical Seminary of America, in New York City. Afterwards, he continued his studies at the prestigious Yeshiva Shaar Hatorah, going on from there to earn his rabbinic ordination. Besides being a foremost authority on the ancient sacred text of The Zohar, Rabbi Berg is the author of The Way: Using the Wisdom of Kabbalah for Spiritual Transformation and Fulfillment published by John Wiley and Sons, a heartfelt spiritual book that reveals the beauty of the ancient wisdom of Kabbalah.
He is co-director of the publication of all Kabbalah Centre books, including numerous books in Hebrew, and a compilation of historical letters of the great Kabbalistic master, Rabbi Yehuda Brandwein, as well as director of development for The Kabbalah Centre website.
In additiong, Rabbi Berg is known for his powerfully-inspiring weekly lectures on the wisdom of Kabbalah. He relentlessly organizes and conducts seminars, on an international basis, for The Kabbalah Centre. Rabbi Michael Berg lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Monica, their two sons and daughter, also spending considerable time at The Kabbalah Centre in New York.
